Video
After the Navy, I went back to school to finish a degree in Communication with a certificate in Media Production. While in university, I immersed myself in videography and journalism. I fully produced--scripted, filmed, video and sound edited, etc.--a handful of videos and wrote award-winning articles. My next educational stop was at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Missoula, MT. There I learned how to professional handle my camera and was introduced to the many forms of photography. While I am focusing on photography, I still have a passion for all things media. Here are some of my proudest works. I hope you enjoy.
"Not just killing myself"
While I am proud of all my work, I am particularly proud of this PSA. My university worked with the Georgia Cancer Center on a joint-project: each videography student would produce a 30-second anti-smoking/vaping PSA.
This video won a local award, aired on local TV, and won 1st place Gold - Student Category in the international Telly Awards.
Communication professor Debbie van Tuyll soon to retire
This video is more a general news segment. This was the first time I did any work like this. I enjoyed the whole process from the interviews to writing the story. Sadly, it was done at a high-point of the COVID crisis. This made it difficult to get a better variety of shots. But sometimes you just have to work with what you have. Fortunately, I was able to setup and safely conduct interviews with the professors.
Debbie van Tuyll was a pillar in the AU Communication department and a tenacious, impressive woman who battled cancer during the pandemic while continuing with her passion. It was an honor and pleasure to work with her.
"Manual"
A short turnaround project during photography school. Students were to interview and produce a short documentary about some personal aspect of a fellow student. Paige loves cars and had several times expressed her love of driving stick shift. She was an excellent subject and her interest a fun topic.
The video is a bit rough due to the quick turnaround. But I really enjoyed the process and, frankly, I particularly like the end product. Would have loved to have more time on it.
Thanks, Paige.
"Relative Tuning"
First video assignment in photography school: a "how-to" visual. Short. Simple. Fun. And if I do say so myself, visually and aurally pleasing.
Journalism
In college, I was introduced to the art of journalism. I've always enjoyed writing, but this was a new and welcomed challenge. It was an opportunity to build skills and confidence in research and interviewing. I developed a verve as well as, turns out, a penchant for the journalistic process. I would go on to win multiple school, state and southeast regional awards going up against larger and more prestigious university communication departments like University of Georgia, University of Alabama and University of Florida, to name a few. Awards include:
º Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards for Region III - General News Reporting, First Place
º Southern Regional Press Institute - Best News Photography, First Place
º Southern Regional Press Institute - Best News Story, First Place
º Georgia College Press Association - Best Photo Essay, Second Place
º Georgia College Press Association - Best News Article, Objective Reporting, Second Place
